What's New?
Governor Schwarzenegger signed AB 2675 into law. The bill will allow 20 of the 40 required hours for Adult Residential administrator and Group Home administrator certification to be earned in online classes. The bill easily passed through the legislative process. Our special thanks to Assemblywoman Audra Strickland for her commitment to residential facility administrators. We are also grateful for the support of ResCoalition, several competitor training vendors for assisting with letters of support, and to all of you who wrote very compelling letters of support for the bill.
We know your time is valuable and we've heard over and over about adminstrators’ needs for flexibility about the training requirements. We remain committed to providing informative, lively and fun training both in classrooms and ONLINE. We have several courses submitted for approval. Visit our website often to get an update on approved classes.
Other Legislative Updates:
Medication Training for RCFE – AB 2609
Watch this space for more information on the implementation of AB2609, which requires additional training on medication in RCFEs. We are working on several types of training programs to meet the requirements in our typical “informative, lively and fun” way. Medications are a serious responsibility. Our training will assure that your staff members are appropriately trained, with additional information for administrators to use to monitor compliance.
Fire Safety – AB 2836
The Governor vetoed AB 2836, which would have required all residential care facilities, including those with four or more residents, to install automatic sprinkler systems approved by the State Fire Marshall.
Governor Schwarzenegger recognized the significant economic impact on residential care providers, while noting the author’s intent to mitigate injuries and fatal fires in small residential care facilities.
Watch this space for more information on Disaster Planning – both online and classroom programs. Continuous, thorough and thoughtful disaster drills and planning are critical in our work. Most of our students tell us that their facilities have drills, while they do not practice the same safety in their personal homes. That could mean that elders are safer in facilities than they would be at home. It will take continued vigilance and extraordinary compliance on the part of small capacity facilities to assure that we can show that residents are safe without the added expense of required sprinkler systems.
We have heard from many residential providers who have lost
thousands of dollars as a result of becoming involved in a lawsuit, often through no fault of their own.
In our business, it's not a question of IF you'll need an attorney, it's WHEN. With legal fees averaging
around $300 per hour, it makes sense to have the security and peace of mind of knowing you have access to one
of the top law firms in California.
Pre-Paid
Legal Service can give you peace of mind for less than $2.50 per
day - most of you will enjoy even lower membership fees!

your business, please call our office.
Effective Behavioral Management Training - We have a fabulous staff training course which covers all aspects of behavior
management, with a focus on prevention. We are most concerned with the safety of residents and
staff. We have found that most instances of staff using any type of restraint could have been
avoided. This course will teach staff how to prevent crises and de-escalate behaviors. The course
can be provided in a variety of time frames to meet your need. We find that two – six hour days is
the most effective.
Value Marketing -
Specific to small capacity RCFEs, we have developed a program on value
marketing. The program helps administrators to define the value they
sell to prospective residents and outlines a number of ways in which
to reach your target market. The manual is available on our website.
Consultation - Experienced Consultants are available to assist in developing your
program, preparing a licensing application, developing customized staff training programs, and working with
you on corrective action plans.
